Every man is connected to three generations – the generation you met, the generation you belong and the generation you give birth to. The generation you meet owes you their history, records and principles. The generation you belong to needs your impact. The generation you give birth to owes you continuity or change as the case demands while you owe them the foundation to build upon.
Before us the previous generation has gone. We have our heroes of faith – Apostle Paul, Peter, John, Abraham. They have gone but they left us stones to follow. We can follow their epistles. Paul’s epistles show us what happened in Christ. E.W. Kenyon (a pastor of the New Covenant Baptist Church and founder and president of Bethel Bible Institute in Spencer, Massachusetts; 1867-1948) died before my grandfather was born, but I’ve met him in his books. He showed me the paths to walk as a New Creation. Kenneth E. Hagin (an influential American Pentecostal Preacher, often referred to as the father of the “Word of Faith” movement) showed us how to walk the path of faith and how pivotal it is for our Christian race. Stones have been deposited by the fathers for the next generation.
Yet My people have forgotten Me; they burn incense to false gods, they have been caused to stumble in their ways AND IN THE ANCIENT ROADS, to walk in bypaths, in a way not graded and built up [not on a highway] – Jer.18:15.
Remove not the ancient landmark… Prov.23:10
Tommy Barnett (an author, the senior pastor of Phoenix First Assembly of God mega church in Phoenix, Arizona) has a son, Matthew (Pastor and co-founder of the Dream Center in Los Angeles, California). Matthew Hagee (Associate Pastor of Cornerstone Church) is building on the stone that has been laid by his father John Hagee (an America founder and senior pastor of Cornerstone in San Antonio, Texas and the CEO of Global Evangelism Television (GETV)). Billy Graham (an American Evangelical Christian Evangelist and was a spiritual adviser to several Presidents of the United States like Dwight D.Eisenhower and Richard Nixon) guided his son, Franklin Graham (an American Christian Evangelist and Missionary and president of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association (BGEA)) on the paths to follow. Jentezen Franklin (the senior Pastor of Free Chapel in Gainesville, Georgia) pursued ministry under the guidance of his father, Billy Franklin. Joel Osteen (an American Preacher, televangelist, author and the Senior Pastor of Lakewood Church, the largest Church in the United States) is still building on the foundation that his father, John Osteen (founder and first pastor of Lakewood Church in Houston). Yours might not be your father or mother, but if you examine your life, you’d discover that there are some stones that have been laid for you to build on. Though, you can decide to veer off their path but there are some people that God has placed in your life that have laid some stones for you to build on
Remove not the ancient landmark which your fathers have set up.Prov.22:28
Somebody left a stone for you to follow. It might be a father, sister, cousin or anybody. Thank God for the stones he has given you to follow. Thank God for following the foundations the Fathers have laid.
Therefore thus says the Lord God: “Behold, I lay in Zion a stone for a foundation, A tried stone, a precious cornerstone, a sure foundation; Whoever believes will not act hastily. Isa.28:16
The Scriptures provide precedent: Look! I’m setting a stone in Zion, a cornerstone in the place of honor. Whoever trusts in this stone as a foundation will never have cause to regret it. 1Pet.2:16 (MSG)
Present yourselves as building stones for the construction of a sanctuary vibrant with life, in which you’ll serve as holy priests offering Christ-approved lives up to God. 1Pet.2:5 (MSG).
For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. (1Cor.3:11).
Christ is the corner stone (a stone for foundation) and we are the building stones. The same composition of elements that makes the cornerstone makes the building stones as well. The block used for the foundation of a house has the same quality as the building blocks. He is the first born and you are in Him. What the corner stone can achieve, the building blocks can also achieve. Christ is your prototype. You are seated together with him in heavenly places. You are a joint-heir with Christ. All that Jesus has is yours.
Christ as our prototype showed us how to walk in the realm of no limit.
At age 12, he sat in the midst of the teachers of the law, both listening to them and asking them questions. He was not even a teenager when he was dazing doctors of the law with his understanding and amazing answers. In our time, that would mean astonishing emeritus professors with his wisdom. He was not just a regular student; he displayed divinity among the scribes. [Luke 2:45-48]
He met with Martha on his way to Lazarus’ house because Lazarus had died and Martha concluded that Jesus was late in coming. She said, “If you had been here, my brother wouldn’t have died”. He raised Lazarus from the dead. Everywhere he went, death couldn’t hold sway. Life abounded everywhere He went. [John 11:1-45]
The disciples were in the boat and there was such a massive storm of wind. They were going down. But when Jesus rose to the occasion, the wind ran out of his breath and the sea became smooth as glass. Wind and sea were at his beck and call. He altered the course of nature. He had power over nature. [Mark 4:37-41]
He was asked to pay tax and Judas Iscariot, the treasurer wasn’t around. He asked Peter to get down to the lake, cast a hook, and pull in the first fish that bites because in that fish resides the coin needed. He controlled the economy. There was always money in circulation; he was never stranded. He was more than the minister for finance. [Mathew 17:24-27].
He spoke to the fig tree and it obeyed. He was more than the Minister of Agriculture because even plants obeyed him. [Mathew 21:19-21].
With five loaves and two fishes, He fed 5,000 people with twelve baskets left over. He was more than a philanthropist; he was the God of more than enough meeting needs. [Mt. 14:17-21]. He was more than a career coach. He was setting men on the path of purpose and destiny. He was giving meaning to the lives of men. He was more than a Medical Doctor. He healed all kinds of diseases including age-old infirmities. All forms of diseases and sicknesses couldn’t resist the healing power of his word. He was more than a lecturer or a motivational speaker. He taught for three days, healing all that were oppressed by one form of disease or the other; yet the people didn’t ask for food. He had the words of life. His words are Spirit and life.
Whatever dimension in Jesus Christ is the same dimension in you. In Christ, the fullness of the Godhead tabernacles in you. God is back in every sphere of human endeavors through you. Jesus Christ showed us how to make impossibilities become possible.
When everybody is complaining of insufficiency, you are enjoying abundance. People around you may be complaining of economic recession, but you’ll be enjoying the ability of the Spirit to flourish in hard times. The divine life does not make you ordinary.
In famine and drought, Isaac was digging wells and finding water. In that same year, Isaac sowed in the land and reaped a hundred-fold harvest. He got richer and richer until he became very wealthy. Then Abimelech came to him from Gerar with Ahuzzath his advisor and Phicol the head of his troops to make a covenant with him [Gen.26:12-30]. Can you imagine the President of a Country with his Special Adviser and Chief of Defence Staff coming to make pact with just one man, Isaac? People should make transactions with you because they know you carry the fullness of divinity in you. They should form ally with you because they know God is with them because God is in you.
At menopause, Sarah conceived Isaac. In the face of seeming setbacks, Joseph was enjoying progress. Abraham’s dead sperm cells needed something higher than the normal life to be able to produce Isaac. People should be looking for you when they have impossible cases because they know that the divine life you carry dispels impossibility. You are a heir of God and a joint-heir with Christ. You are the seed of Abraham [Gal.3:29].
When a viper fastened itself to Apostle Paul’s hand and the villagers expected him to swell up and die. Paul just shook the viper into the fire and the villagers had to conclude that He was a god. [Acts 28:1-6]. The divine life is a higher life. It’s a life that transcends over mere existence. It’s the God-life. Let your colleagues, co-workers, class mates, business partners see that there is something different about you. Let them conclude you are a god because they can see that despite the fact that you do the ordinary things, you get extraordinary results.
You don’t need to start making it a prayer point that “Father, give me divine life”. The divine life is in you already because you are in Christ Jesus (our cornerstone). You have God’s ability abiding in you in the person of Christ.
Ray McCauley puts it this way, “If we want people to want the faith we have, they must see the quality of life it produces”. The quality of life they want to see is the divine life – the God-kind of life.
As you step into the week, be conscious of the reality that the fullness of the Godhead tabernacles in you. You are the perfect expression of divinity among men.
I believe so much in you.
